No single power source is enough

A fault on the Akosombo-Volta line cut power across large parts of Ghana on 20 August 2026. The second major outage in a month proves the grid alone cannot carry a business.

What happened on 20 August

Yesterday, a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line knocked out power across large parts of Ghana. GRIDCo reports the disturbance at about 4:30 a.m. It triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal plants, as protection systems acted to safeguard the National Interconnected Transmission System.

Engineers isolated the affected line and began systematic restoration. Supply returned to some areas through the day while work continued elsewhere. That response matters. It also proves a bigger point: no single power source is enough to build a business on.

High-voltage transmission lines
A transmission-line fault can take plants offline together. Restoration is GRIDCo’s job. Continuity on site is yours.

The question every critical site must ask

A hospital, a cold store, a hotel, a factory, a bank branch, a school, a telecom site. Each one has to ask: what happens when the grid goes down, and can we keep running?

Some countries treat planned work differently. In the UK, when lines need work, people often get notice first: what will happen, when, and for how long. The outage may be short. What matters is the warning and the plan.

Ghana can build that same business certainty. It will not come from the grid alone. It has to be built into every building that cannot afford to stop.

Renewable and grid power infrastructure
Resilience is multi-source: grid, battery, generator, and optional solar under one orchestrated system.

What EcoSmart builds

EcoSmart designs Smart Modular Power Systems that combine several sources (grid, batteries, solar, and generators) into one architecture that switches automatically. When one source fails, another takes over. No manual switching. No guessing. No waiting on the next public update to know if your site can open today.

  • Hospitals and clinics that need refrigeration and clinical equipment to stay on
  • Hotels that cannot explain a blackout to a guest
  • Cold stores and food businesses protecting stock
  • Factories and banks where downtime is direct financial loss
  • Schools and telecom sites that need to stay connected

Every blackout is a reminder. The businesses that plan for it keep running. The ones that do not, stop.

If your site cannot afford another blackout

EcoSmart designs modular critical power for hospitals, hotels, factories, banks, cold stores, and other sites across Ghana that need to stay on whatever the grid does. Start a pilot conversation and we will map what a resilient system looks like for your load and runtime.
